The Little Reactor that Couldn’t
The history of small reactors in Canada includes some very
expensive “lemons,” something that should give pause to anyone seriously
contemplating getting into that kind of business.
As an example, one of those not so successful small reactor efforts was the
SLOWPOKE 3, a brainchild of Atomic Energy of Canada, Ltd. (AECL).
The moral of this story is that there is no such thing as an inherently safe
nuclear reactor. Those who contemplate going down that road should
carefully assess the lessons from the past. If they do so, they might very
well choose other, more preferable alternatives.
